About

Sarah Alchemy grew up in Santa Rosa, California as an avid reader that believed in the transformative power of books. As a high school student, she noticed a decline in passion for literacy among youth in her community and understood the educational repercussions this could cause.

Her solution was to improve access to children’s books in underserved areas of her community and spread her enthusiasm for reading through fun projects. Her mission began as a community book drive and grew into free library carts and bookshelves that she maintained in partnership with other local organizations.

Her projects gained community recognition and in 2016 she was awarded funding from a local grant non-profit organization called Bread for the Journey. She used this money to create Little Bear Literacy as an official corporation and to supply books to pediatric departments around the bay area. For more information, see our Past Projects page!

In 2018, Sarah began attending the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington, where she found a new community that she was excited to work with. She began working as a volunteer at Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital and became one of the first “literacy volunteers” in their new “Loves to Read” program. Sarah also became a volunteer at a local women’s resource center called Catherine Place and partnered with them to expand their children’s library. Sarah has enjoyed spreading her love for reading everywhere she goes and is eager to improve access to reading material for youth in her community.
